African Christmas

by kgroke on Dec.05, 2009, under Family

Montessori Dayspring of St George puts on a Christmas play each year to help children in Africa. My oldest two were in it, and they both did a great jorb. Here are some clips from it.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Princess Katie is now Six Years of Age

by kgroke on Jun.06, 2009, under Family

Last Friday we had two birthday parties, Katie’s 6th and Natalyn’s 8th. We celebrated Katie’s in the morning and Natalyn’s in the evening, with me going to work in between. That made for a very busy day :) Katie decided she wanted to have a Unicorn party. The kids played in the play room until everyone showed up, while I hid in my bedroom.

When everyone was there I came out, yelling for Princess Katie in my best “Crocodile Dundee” voice, and dressed the part of a medieval hunter, or something like that anyways. I gathered the young Lord and Ladies around and told them that in my youth I had been lost in the forest and had been rescued by a Unicorn. I had spent me whole life developing my woodsman skills so that I could track them and see one again. This morning I had spotted signs of one, and wanted their help in finding it. With my assistant, Maid Natalyn, we proceeded to train the young nobles to find a Unicorn.

First we trained them in handling their own horses, since they would need to ride to keep up with the Unicorn. They had to lasso a (toy) horse, and then we practiced horse riding with a relay race, and we had an oat (cheerio) eating contest so they could empathize better with the animals.

After that we were ready to track the Unicorn! I led them to the spot where I had discovered the mysterious Unicorn hoofprint. What but a magical unicorn could leave a print in a child’s sandbox, 3 feet off the ground.

While examining the hoofprint, we discovered a note from the unicorn. It was a clue to to another note, with one of the unicorns shoes, lost in the garden while it was getting a snack.

That note led to another shoe, then to some unicorn mane (sparkly string) and finally the unicorn’s horn itself and gift bags for each of the hunters.

It was starting to get hot, so we went inside, and everyone got to make their own Ice Cream Sunday at the Sunday Bar. Then we opened presents. Katie got some really neat toys from her friends and was very excited. After that we made homemade sparkle play-dough. Meg had made some salt dough and to that the kids added food coloring and sparkles and created their own creations.

They also played pin the horn on the unicorn while waiting for their parents. All and all I had a blast, and so did the kids :) You can click on the slideshow below to view the whole album.
